THOMAS BJØRN

Date of Birth: 18th February, 1971

Place of Birth: Silkeborg, Denmark

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 88kg

Thomas started playing golf when he was 6 years old but memories of clinging on to his dad’s golf bag and being carted around the course probably date back even further! As a child he was mostly found in his parents’ garden, chipping golf balls into a birdbath over and over again – not being able to leave until all the balls were safely inside! (This birdbath now sits proudly in Silkeborg Golf Club, Thomas’ home course).

Thomas turned pro in 1993 and hasn’t really looked back…

With 15 wins and 94 Top Ten finishes on the European Tour, Thomas is Denmark’s most successful golfer.  He captured his biggest pay-cheque by winning his 15th title at the Nedbank Golf Challenge at the start of 2014.

That win, along with an eighth place finish at the Masters Tournament and third spot at the BMW PGA Championship, secured a return to Europe's Ryder Cup team; His third appearance in golf’s most famous competition. (He made his debut in the Ryder Cup in 1997, becoming the first ever Danish Ryder Cup player, and also featured in the 2002 team). in the winter of 2016 thomas was announced as the 2018 ryder cup captain, as the first Scandinavian to hold this position it is one that he is incredibly honoured and excited to do.

In 2013, Thomas won the Omega European Masters for the second time in his career, carding a final round 65. He enjoyed a prolific season in 2011, winning the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and the Omega European Masters. The Gleneagles triumph was all the more impressive given that he emerged victorious from a five-man, five-hole play-off. He won the next week in Crans-sur-Sierre.

In 2007, he was appointed Chairman of the European Tour’s Tournament Committee, a role he held for 10 years. His leadership skills have been used to good effect in the Seve Trophy, in which he captained Continental Europe in 2009, and in the 2004, 2010, 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cups, where he was vice captain to winning captains Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie and José María Olazábal as well as great friend Darren Clarke.
